One of my favorite pieces “Husk”1999 is a synthesis of a leopard shark body with chameleon hands, and a moray eel head. The interior is opened like a speciman to reveal a human rib cage and lung. I had observed a small 17 year cicada (grasshopper like insect) larval husk on the ground one morning and later that day found the still wet insect drying out and stretching its wings. It had a profound effect on me. It was then I added the human lung to the interior of the work in progress to complete the transition from fish to lizard to man. The poem and title “Husk” came to me immediatly. I wrote, “Between and angel and a reptile I stood looking for the light, all things were before me to choose from, I passed without a blink, from one world to another”. I felt honored to have watched the emergence of this tiny creature and I felt as if one with it.
